When my parents returned from East Turkestan, modern Xinjiang Province in China, my mother was pregnant with me. I grew up with East Turkestan in my heart. In 1998, Björn and I travelled in my parents’ footsteps, going by bus over the Himalayas on the Karakoram Highway to Kashgar and Yarkand.
