Bud Davis (John Travolta) is a country boy freshly arrived in the big city, who takes to spending his evenings in Gilley's Bar, where he meets cowgirl Sissy (Debra Winger). The pair soon marry, but their connubial bliss is shattered when Bud sees Sissy being taught to ride a mechanical bull by Wes Hightower (Scott Glenn). When Gilley's then announces a bull riding contest, Bud signs himself up, hoping that a victory will help him patch things up with Sissy.
